SYLLABLE:
In English a word which has more than one vowel is divided into syllables. A syllable is a unit of language which contains one vowel and one or more consonants. The following patterns are found in English.
(V = Vowel; C = Consonant)
1. V – a
2. VC – on
3. CV – to
4. CVC – lad
5. CCVC – step
Hence,
The word ‘syllable’ has three syllables and is written in the dictionary as ‘syl-la-ble’.
