PHRASAL VERBS:

To master the language an awareness of some common phrasal verbs is essential. These are groups of words which have a distant meaning, often idiomatic (Idiom' in Telugu - పద బందము).

Phrasal verbs are usually two-word phrases consisting of verb + adverb or verb + preposition. Phrasal verbs have wide usage (వాడుక) in English and are commonly encountered. Therefore, to understand the language properly they are invaluable. 

 
USAGE – I



1. The word “CALL”

Call for = to arrive, demand, request, require.

Call off = to cancel.

Call on = to visit.

Call in = to request the return of.

Call out = to cause to strike or refuse work.


2. The word “TAKE”

Take after = to look or behave like someone.

Take off = to begin a flight.

Take over = to take control of.

Take to = to accept or find pleasing.

Take up = to begin.


3. The word “HOLD”

Hold up = to hinder or stop.

Hold on = to wait, especially on the telephone.

Hold off = to stay away.

Hold back = to control.

Hold out = to last, refuse to yield.


4. The word “SET”

Set aside = to declare as not valid.

Set forth = to begin a journey.

Set up = to cause to explode.

Set in = to fix by placing carefully.


5. The word “GIVE”

Give away = to give or send free of charge.

Give in = to yield.

Give off = to produce.

Give up = to stop trying.

Give off = to produce.

Give out = to stop doing something.



USAGE – II


Generally a verb often occurs in combination with an adverb or a preposition with a specific meaning. These words together function as single unit. They usually mean more than the sum of the words that form their parts. Phrasal verbs are one of the methods of developing competence and confidence in the use of language. i.e,

1. TAKE AFTER = to resemble.

2. STAND OUT AGAINST = refuse to yield.

3. CALL UP = to recall, recollect.

4. TAKE TO = get into a habit.

5. GIVE FORTH = announce.

So you can practice to coin any word in consider by following phrasal verbs:

*My brother takes after my father.

*He stood against all odds and achieved success.

*The beautiful scenery around called up memories of my childhood.

*After the accident she could not call up her past events.

*Well all look up to him as out leader.

CAN YOU SOLVE THIS PUZZLES? - By MaddaliSwetha



1. THE ROUND TABLE CONFERENCE:


Six friends are sitting around a circular table at equal distance from each other. ‘S’ is sitting two places right of ‘A’, who is exactly opposite to ‘R’. ‘R’ is on the immediately left to ‘H’, who is exactly opposite to ‘N’. ‘Y’ is also sitting at the table.
Who is the only person sitting between ‘A’ and ‘S’? And what is the angle subtended by subtended by ‘Y’ and ‘R’.

Answer: ‘N’; 120 degree.


2. ALL IN THE FAMILY:


A, C, D, E, F AND G are six members of a family. A is the father of C, but C is not his son. D is a sibling of C. E is D’s brother-in-law. F is G’s grandson. G is D’s mother.
How many male members are there in the family?


Answer: 4 male members (A, D, F, E)


3. AN APPLE A DAY:


Peter plucks apples. He sells some of them, distributes some among his friends, eats some and takes the rest back home. How many apples did he eat 1/3 rd of the plucked apples, which is 12 less than what he had plucked?


Answer: Peter ate ‘6’ apples.


4. AN UP – LIFTING QUESTION:


A lift is on the ground floor. There are 4 people in the lift including john. When the lift reaches the first floor, 1 person gets out and 3 people get in. The lift goes up to the second floor, 2 people get out and 6 people get in. It then goes up to the next floor, no one gets out but 12 people get in. Halfway up to the next floor, the lift cable snaps, and lift crashed to the floor. Everyone dies in the lift.

Answer: John may be the one person who got down in first floor or one among the two, who got down in second floor.


5. ACROSS THE RIVER:


A man lives small house by a river and has a farm as his back garden. On the other side of the river is a shop. One day he visits the shop. He buys a chicken and a fox for his farm, and a bag of corn to feed chicken. The man can only take one thing and himself across the river in the boat.
Without killing any animal or letting another eat an item or animal, how will the man get across?

Answer: At first, the man transports the chicken to the other side, comes back and takes fox to the other side. He now brings back chicken and takes corn to the side. Finally he gets the chicken.

6. SOCKS AND SHOES:


You are in the dark, and on the floor there are 6 shoes of 3 colors, and a heap of 24 socks, black and brown. How many socks and shoes must you take into the light to be certain that you have a matching pair of socks and a matching pair of shoes?

Answer: 4 shoes and 3 socks.


7. COCO – JUMBO:


 Five men crash – land their airplane on a deserted island in the south pacific. On their first day they gather as many coconuts as they can find into one big pile. They decide that, since it is getting dark, they will wait until the next day to divide the coconuts. That night each man takes turn watching for rescue searchers while the others sleep. The first watcher gets bored so he decides to divide the coconuts into 5 equal piles. When he does this, he finds that he has one remaining coconut. He gives this coconut to a monkey, takes one of the piles, and hides it for himself. Then he jumbles up the four other piles into big pile again. To cut a long story short, each of the five men ends up doing exactly the same thing. Each divides the coconuts into five piles and hides those coconuts. Each comes back and jumbles up the remaining four piles into one bid pile.

What is the smallest number of coconuts there could have been in the original piles?

WHY WE USE F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6, F7, F8, F9, F10, F11, AND F12 ON KEYBOARD FOR DAY TO DAY USEAGE? – By MaddaliSwetha


Windows is a personal computer operating system from Microsoft that, together with somcommonly used business applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel. Where as Microsoft Windows is a series of graphical interface operating systems developed, marketed, and sold by Microsoft.


To operate system you need two input mediums such as key broad and mouse. In keyboard, you may find these keys that are used for daily usage.


F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6, F7, F8, F9, F10, F11, and F12 keys are known as function keys. Depending on the installed operating system and the software program currently open will change how each of these keys operate. 

A program is capable of not only using each of the function keys, but also combining the function keys with the ALT or CTRL or SHIFT key.


FOR EXAMPLE:

Microsoft Windows users can press ALT + F4 to close the program currently active.


LET’S FIND HOW THESE KEYS USED AS FUNCTIONS:


F1:

It is used as the help key.

Almost every program opens a help screen when this key is pressed.

Windows Key + F1 would open the Microsoft Windows help and support center.

Open the Task Pane.

F2:

In Windows renames a highlighted icon, file, or folder in all versions of Windows.

Alt + Ctrl + F2 opens document window in Microsoft Word.

Ctrl + F2 display the print preview window in Microsoft Word.

Quickly rename a selected file or folder.

F3:

Often opens a search feature for many programs including Microsoft Windows when at the Windows Desktop.

In MS-DOS or Windows command line F3 will repeat the last command.

Shift + F3 will change the text in Microsoft Word from upper to lower case or a capital letter at the beginning of every word.

Windows Key + F3 opens the Advanced find window in Microsoft Outlook.


F4:

Open find window in Windows 95 to XP.

Open the address bar in Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer.

Repeat the last action performed (Word 2000+)

Alt + F4 close the program window currently active in Microsoft Windows.

Ctrl + F4 close the open window within the current active window in Microsoft Windows.

F5:

In all modern Internet browsers pressing F5 will refresh or reload the page or document window.

Open the find, replace, and go to window in Microsoft Word.
Starts a slideshow in PowerPoint.


F6:

Move the cursor to the Address bar in Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and most other Internet browsers.

Ctrl + Shift + F6 open to another open Microsoft Word document.


F7:

Commonly used to spell check and grammar check a document in Microsoft programs such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, etc.

Shift + F7 runs a Thesaurus check on the MS.word highlighted.


F8:

Function key used to enter the Windows startup menu, commonly used to access Windows Safe Mode.


F9:

Refresh document in Microsoft Word.

Send and receive e-mail in Microsoft Outlook.

Opens the Measurements toolbar.


F10:

In Microsoft Windows activates the menu bar of an open application.

Shift + F10 are the same as right-clicking on a highlighted icon, file, or Internet link.

F11:

It is used to minimize or maximize the windows.


F12:

Open the Save as window in Microsoft Word.

Ctrl + F12 will save the document In Word (like Ctrl + S).

Shift + F12 save the Microsoft Word document (by given different names and formulae the saved file.

Ctrl + Shift + F12 print a document in Microsoft Word.
Preview a page in Microsoft Expression Web.


Open Firebug.
