WHAT DOES THE WORD “SURNAME”  MEANT IN INDIA? – By MaddaliSwetha

Definitions of Surname (Noun):
The name used to identify the members of a family (as distinguished from each member's given name).
Indian Surnames and Family Names are derived from a variety of systems and naming conventions. The surnames are influences by religion, profession, region, caste, etc.

Hence, in short………….
Everyone has a name, a "Surname and Gotram". Once the parents will decide name, it can be any name but as far as, Surname and Gotram are concerned they are already fixed.

Surnames are generally the names of Villages, Trees, Animals, Flowers, Fruits, Things and also Professions. Regarding Gotras there are several versions about their formation. And according to Indian culture, once girl is married …..Girl will carry husband’s father surname and before marriage she carry father’s father surname.

EXAMPLE:<HUSBAND FATHER’S SURNAME><ORGIANAL NAME><HUSBAND NAME>.

It is to be noted that people give more importance to surname. Surname is treated as belongs to one community that means community –
 *Norms,
*Principles,
*Values,
*Rules,
*Traditions,
*Customs, and
*Eating habits

Please Note: Husband’s father surname in my views  is forefather’s surname.
