WHEN YOU APPLY FOR JOBS, WHY YOUR RESUME IS NOT SHORTLISTED?

In the year 2015, I have posted an article about Top 10 career objectives in LinkedIn. I got a very good response from readers and viewers in LinkedIn. 


But one question which was asked by many people – WHY MY RESUME IS NOT SHORTLISTED? Here is the answer in brief. 


The question is - When you apply for jobs, why your resume is not shortlisted? Right!


There are two situations when you would get rejected in interviews: 

  1. Sending resume to interviewer like resume screening, etc. 

  2. Face to Face interview


(If you are sending your resume and it does not get shortlisted, that means you are lacking presentation skills on resume point of view.

You have to change your resume according to interviews. Such as considering different types of resumes.


Basically, there are 5 types of resumes. Those are Chronological Resume, Functional Resume, Combination Resume, Infographic Resume and Targeted Resume.


But here we are discussing about situations:

  1. Sending resume to interviewer i.e, resume screening 


If you are sending your resume for small company. Your resume should be simple. You can extend resume to 2 or 4 pages.

If you are sending your resume for big company or MNC’s. Your resume should be structured with no grammatical mistakes. You can extend resume to 1 or 2 pages.

Remember if you are applying for senior most jobs like CEO, CFO, Vice President etc, your resume can extend from 3 to 6 pages.


For example:

In general, when I apply for jobs, my resume is shortlisted immediately and I got job offers. 

But one day I have seen a big Newspaper website and wanted to send my resume. Before applying I felt I need to change my resume by using little bit high English grammar. 

When I applied, they have rejected my resume that it is high standard resume candidate. They said we wanted standard resume candidate not high and it is one page resume which was sent. This process is nothing but how you send your resume to interviewer. 


  1. Face to Face interview:

If you are attending face to face interview then after your resume is rejected that means you are lack in these skills. Those are

  • Lack of presentations skills
  • English Grammar
  • Lack in subject knowledge
  • Editing mistakes
  • Lack of relevant skills like experience
  • Irrelevant information 
  • No research about the company or organization 
  • Avoiding Basic skills or requirement to mention in resume


These are the two situations - Why your resume is not shortlisted?
