Noun (Naming
Word)
Today
we are going to learn all about nouns. Nouns are the most common things in our
life. Any name is a noun. Any place is a noun. Anything is a noun.
Look at
some examples of nouns:
Names =
Gandhi, Kishore, Sita etc.
Places
= Delhi, Hospital, Police station etc.
Things
= Computer, Pen, Table etc.
Animals
= Horse, Cat, Dog, etc.
KINDS OF NOUNS:
Nouns
are divided into five categories. These are
1.
Proper noun,
2.
Common Noun,
3.
Collective Noun,
4.
Abstract Noun,
5.
Material Noun.
1. PROPER NOUN:
Proper
nouns are noun, which refers to the names of people, organisations or places. When
you write a proper noun you have to use capital letters in the beginning of the
word.
E.g. Kishore,
Delhi, Onida etc.
2. COMMON NOUN:
Common
nouns are nouns mentioning certain types of things. This name will be
applicable to a group or class.
E.g.
Child, Dog, Cat, Student, Horse, Car, Train etc.
3. COLLECTION NOUN:
Collective
noun refers to a group of people or things.
E.g.
Crowd, Mob, Committee, Assembly, Fleet, etc.
4. ABSTRACT NOUN:
Abstract
nouns are used to describe qualities, ideas, mentality, concept and attitude.
E.g.
Honesty, Cruelty, Knowledge, Freedom, Happiness, Boldness, Greatness etc.
5. MATERIAL NOUN:
Material
nouns are the names of materials.
E.g.
Wood, Paper, Gold, Silver, Iron etc.
FURTHER CLASSIFICATION OF
NOUNS:
Apart
from the five normal classifications, Nouns are further classified into two
types:
1.
Countable Nouns
2. Uncountable
Nouns
1. COUNTABLE NOUNS:
Countable
nouns are the nouns which you can count in terms of numbers.
E.g.
Student – Two students,
Ball – Five balls.
2. UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS:
Uncountable
nouns are nouns, which cannot be counted.
E.g.
Sugar, Water, Oil, Sand, Rice, etc.
Friends let’s have a small exercise
that helps to know the usage of nouns. While writing a sentence:

goes to his office by walk.
4. The
computer is a machine.
5. The
